"Yes, I was considering that as well." He beams, looking at her once more before clapping his hands and standing.

"Well, I say I accompany you. I've not been out of this stuffy office in quite some time. Perhaps afterwards we could go to the promenade. Or, perhaps the holosuits if they have them finished yet. I hear the latter has a very nice rendition of Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème as viewed in 1897 Rome."

He bows and gestures for her to go first.

*After walking out of the CSO Office she returned to her office with Mr. Martin, she walking in and ordered the lights on and went to her desk where boxes were stacked up on the floor.*

looking back at Mr. Martin she nodded, "See, I haven't nearly finished unpacking. I suppose it is illogical to have so many personal materials, but my mind tends to want it all around."

"Hmm, yes indeed." He says as he spots something on a table across the room. He strides quickly over to it and picks it up.

"Is this a first edition copy of Darwin's Origin of Species? I thought they'd all been lost hundreds of years ago, this is a priceless treasure, not just in science but in writing." His eyes were wide with glee.

"Yes Sir, that is what it is, I found it at a shop in San Fransisco. Owner had no idea what he had. I also got a first print or "Mien Kampf" by Adolf Hitler, what an amazing piece of work, I do believe that the borg have grasped the very concepts writen in this book." She chuckled to herself after speaking.

"You're such a nerd Stella." she thought to herself

Naquv had finished with his reports and gotten all of the other reports from his other officers. It was all ready for his new exec. there was nothing else to do but wait and continue running scans on his section of the ship.
At first, he could barely feel it, the pain was so unnoticeable he didn't take any note. But the pain very slowly became more noticeable, intense and eating him from his brain outwards. There was no writhing in pain but in a loud wisper he said,
"Lieutenant, I need to go to sickbay. Now. I request no escort." he did not wait for an answer as he stumbled to the turbolift.

(OFF: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but being a quarter Vulcan and a quarter Betazoid isn't enough to make one telekinetic. In fact, neither of them are telekinetic even when pure-bloods.)

Commander Ian Shepard - Bridge, U.S.S. Concordia

Shepard and Reid took the turbolift down the transporter room, and set their coordinates to the command deck of Starbase 384. They materialized in Transporter Room 1 on Vernemeton's Deck 7A. Unfamiliar with the layout of a Jupiter-class starbase, it took them a fewe minutes to find an information terminal and commit a basic map of the station to memory. Luckily, the station was relatively small, having only forty-five inhabitable decks, as opposed to over 250 on a Stardock-class station.

"Computer," Ian queried, "locate the commander of this installation." The computer chimed, and responded: "Captain Faraness Rangwere is on Deck 2A, in the administrative offices."

"Good," he said. "There should be a turbolift this way," he pointed. "C'mon, we'd best report into the captain."

(OFF: soz guys been really busy with work this week)

The turbolift came to a halt right outside Faraness's office. She thought it was quite convinient as it meant less walking to and from her office.

The group walked in and Faraness took her seat.

"Take a seat gentlemen." She said in a calm and collected voice.

"Now Mr Brackman. How long did you say we had left until the Borg reached your vessel?"

Brackman opened his mouth to answer but was interrupted by QAI.

"The Borg sphere has completed repairs to its transwarp drive. Recalculating...ETA is now 2 hours. Additionally, the shuttle's survival percentage has been recalculated to 7%."

Brackman was momentarily aghast at this new development before managing to compose himself again.

"Well, Captain, if you think destroying my shuttle is the best option, you'll have to do it quickly. There is a small problem though. The shuttle itself has been designed against structural collapse, so even if you penetrate the shields - and that's a rather big if since QAI is controlling them - it will still take quite a while for you to destroy it. Not to mention the fact that the Borg will be there when you arrive."

"You have no idea what kind of technology is on that shuttle, but saving it seems rather contradictory to Starfleet principles, so despite the fact that my shuttle holds a sentient AI, could accelerate the Federation and Starfleet's research by decades and has the technology to combat the Borg and win, you want to destroy it."

Commander Ian Shepard - Deck 7A, Vernemeton Station

"I have to admit, some of the junior officers seem a little... inexperienced, but then again, we were all inexperienced when we showed up for our first duty shift. Can't blame them there. As long as they keep their training in mind these first few weeks, experience should follow."

The turbolift stopped on Deck 1A, and Shepard saw the administrative offices dotting the sides of the corridor. Captain Rangwere's office was on the complete opposite end of the corridor, and Ian saw a turbolift on that end, and immediately wished he had specified the captain's office when setting their destination. They reached the end of the corridor and Ian noticed that the door was not set to open immediately, meaning the captain was likely in her office, perhaps with a guest. Shepard reached over to the panel beside the door and pressed the call button, hoping that the captain could see him without too much wait.

The door bell to Faraness's Office rang as the mechanical dog, who seemed to be her new pet of some sort, ran to the door and started barking.

"Down boy." She called to the dog hoping it would obey her command.

**Upon hearing the voice of Captain Rangwere the door opened and she followed Captain Shepard into the new COs office it was rather large in comparison to what she was accustomed to and she was astounded that it was at least 3 times the size of her new office, which was much larger than anyhting she had previously had. The thought of her new Jr officers still weighed heavily on her mind. She was so accustomed to following her instinct first, regulations second. That she was slightly unsettled by the thought of everything being done "by-the-book." She could still vividly remember her first away mission in which 9 officers died because a CO decided to do things "by-the-book." It wasnt that she believed in anarchy but there are times when it is vital to bend the rules.**

Post subject:  Re: Episode 1: "All Roads Lead to Sol"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<Victor E. Fleech, Vernemeton Station, Corridors>

Brackman? Afgrijselijk!
What was a man like Brackman doing on this side of the galaxy? Creeps like him belong in Arkham and the like!

Brackman completely occupied Victor's thoughts, so he did not even consider to look if he was going the right way.

He is the scourge of science, the definition of Pariah!
The man's work was not even spoken of, merely vaguely referred to. Several science councils really wanted to speak to him, starfleet's supposedly amongst them. As well as being in high demand on certain universities and not for lectures.

Another turn brought Victor to the central lift. He did not have to wait long for it to open, when it did he stepped in and said in a muffled voice: "Brug". The lift gave a short soft bleep, like an error message. After which Fleech added in a clear voice: "Bridge".

The man who had been occupying Fleech's though was swiftly replaced by another man. Another man of whom he knew little, but owed so much to. Even being named after him. He had been a starfleet officer aswell. He had worked as a security officer on a starfleet base. Victor had never forgiven him for what he did, which was why he also did not enter the starfleet academy, even when his mother and grandfather liked him to. He had gone of to university, so he could become a full-fledged scientist. Instead he got contracted at his former secondary school and did little research. Is that why he had joined this mission. to finally do the research he had always wanted to do?

<Victor E. Fleech, Vernemeton station, Bridge>

The lift made a short bleep, after which the doors opened. Walking forward Fleech entered the bridge, his mind wandering of again. The central chairs looked comfortable, but Victor had no interest in occupying them. Or atleast not of a station like this. While greeting the personal at work on the bridge he walked through it towards the officer's room. A more formal meeting was in place and this room would be the stage for that for the times to come.

After replicating a coffee from the sole replicator, he took place at the seat which held his name on a small board on the table infront of it. Greeting the officers already there, he noticed the captain and other higher ranked officers were not there yet.

Still of with Brackman no doubt.

"Welcome to Starbase 384 Commander. Although I wouldnt get too comfortable just yet." She said in a welcoming tone.

She then indiscreetly points to Mr brackman.

"This is Mr Gustaf Brackman. He is a civilian scientist of a sort. He is also the U.S.S Concordia's first mission in the Delta Quadrant. Please take a seat."

She then took her seat again and turned towards Gustaf.

"Mr Brackman please explain the current situation to the Commander."

"More like a scientist that fell from grace," muttered Brackman under his breath.

Brackman shifted his position to face the newcomers. He wondered briefly why Rangwere seemed so off, going from outright rudeness to being agreeable within the span of half an hour or so, before taking a deep breath and sighing.

"It seems my research shuttle has been stranded in an asteroid field a couple of lightyears from here. The exact coordinates are unknown to me and QAI. To add to the situation, a Borg sphere is expected to arrive within two hours. My shuttle contains information, experiments, and many other things that you really don't want in the Borg's possession."

"Destroying it isn't much of an option - it would be time-consuming and QAI wouldn't like the fact that you're also destroying his primary processors, not to mention the Borg would have destroyed half your ship before you're even halfway done. Saving it would be the better option, since my shuttle contains research on anti-Borg technology and other potentially revolutionary and politially-destablizing research."

Brackman glanced at his wrist device before adding, "Oh, and I forgot to mention. The shuttle has suffered a cascade failure and many of its systems are too badly damaged to be repaired. I'll need parts from a working shuttle to replace the damaged parts. Preferably from that new shuttle class, what was it called?" Brackman frowned for a moment before saying, "Well, anyway, really any shuttle built rather recently would do, but that new class is the most compatible.

Brackman glanced at his wrist device again before continuing, "But that's long term. If we can't save my shuttle, there isn't much point in worrying how to fix it, is there? And doing it quickly might be be helpful. The Borg sphere might be damaged, from what QAI reports, but it is continuing repairs as we speak. As far as I know, it will be completely repaired by the time it arrives and then we'll have a few more problems on our hands."

Russel Hilliard, The Hub, Vernemeton
Hilliard finished putting up all of the decorations in his new establishment. He wasn't much of a designer, but he tried to put some appropriate decorations on his wall for a earth 1980's theme. The 'decorations' were all stuff of his own, the things he bought from odd shops around earth. He was somewhat of an expert on that particular era, he always liked that era, with it's wild music and such. but his favorite thing of all was vintage cars, which was reflected on by his pub, or bar or whatever he called it, he didn't care, to he thought, it's just the Hub, nothing more.

Brackman opened his mouth to add something but was interrupted by QAI. He closed his mouth quickly as QAI began to speak.

"The shuttle's coordinates have been determined though the analysis of the amount of time taken to arrive at Vernemeton Station and direction of arrival to the station, with adjustments for course corrections. The coordinates have been sent to you, Dr. Brackman, and can be accessed at any time."

There was a brief pause before QAI continued. "Tactical update. The Borg sphere is still estimated to arrive in under 2 hours. Scans indicate their repairs are proceeding quickly and will be near completion when they arrive. Survival percentage adjusted to compensate. New survival percentage is 4%."

"Well Mr. Shepard you and your crew fly safe and we expect to see you back here in one peace." She said as she looked towards the stations counselor who was also in the room.

She had never actually faced the borg in battle. During WOlf 359 she was on training very far from the system and then she was stationed in the beta quadrant. Therefore she had not been formally introduced to the Borg as of yet and she was quite afraid that she may get that chance sooner than she had hoped.**

Russ put the finishing touches on his new Hub, the final thing being an old neon sign that had 'open' and 'closed' written on it. He had some trouble making it work, but with one request and a few tools he got the minute amount of energy he needed. From his view from behing the bar, he sized up everything. On the left at the entrance, there was a sign above the Door that said The Hub. The sign had a replicated automobile hubcap with big letters across it. Beyond that there were tables and chairs near the front with games, specifically Billiards lined up at the back. On the right side was his collections of various items.
Satisfied with his work he switched the sign to the 'off ' position and left for his quarters, which were relatively small and beside his Hub.

"Our ship is holding position near the station. Let's get going." Shepard and Reid ushered Brackman to the corner of the room, to separate themselves from the others on sensors. The commander then tapped his commbadge. "Shepard to Concordia, three to beam back."

Onboard the U.S.S Concordia

Shepard, Reid, and Brackman materialized on the first three transporter pads, and the Ian immediately stepped down from the transport platform. "Please follow us, doctor." The two Starfleet officers led the civilian scientist to the nearest turbolift, which deposited them on the bridge soon thereafter. Shepard watched as Lieutenant Urban noticed their return and left the command seat, and he took the seat himself. Alyssa took the seat beside him, and Brackman took a seat opposite of Reid. There wasn't a seat on that side per se, but most Intrepid captains considered this small platform below the center railing to be where their advisors sat.

"Helm, prepare for departure. Ready the warp engines for maximum speed, and standby. Doctor, we could use those coordinates."

"Okay, get this bay ready for battle, I do not want to us to lose any power here... but remember to keep the core shielded, and have a hand phaser near you, I do not want my engineering to be overtaken because we don't have protection from marines nor do we know how many security guards are going to be hear, but we must be ready... I want round the clock updates on engines and the core levels, I do not want a surprise happening that could have been spotted a mile away if people pay attention, is that understood?"

Dwight sighed, he would have to keep Cochrane in his office till this battle was over with, he could only think of one foe that would be out here to cause them to be at this alert and no where close, the Borg.

"So you do have a name. Argus huh."

Then the mechanical dog spoke.

"I am a Self conscious prototype AI, Guardian Unit. My files tell me that I am supposed to be looking for two people. If I cant find one, my programming tells me to find the other, however, I already found one and my sensors are telling me the other is nearby. But, I must ask that you dont reveal to anyone that I can communicate let alone understand." Argus asked. "The man I am searching for is named...........S......S.........Saul." Argus added.

"Your looking for my strategics officer? Who is the first person you are looking for? And what does your programming say you are suppose to do once you have found these people??" Faraness asked still being carefull of what she said.

"I need to talk to Saul, the information I carry wont be unlocked till I speak to him. I already found the first person I was sent to find, but they were dead. Secondary target is Saul. Once I find Saul, I have been instructed to show him the information I have encrypted in my CPU. Only his presence, security code, voice identification, face identification, and eye scan, will open up the files. Anyone who tries to force the files out of me, will end up having my CPU crash, all files deleted, and this guardian unit destroyed." the projection replied.

"This was a recording meant for you." Argus said before running the message.

"Hello, Saul. I was a friend of your fathers. I have programmed the Argus unit to seek out your sister, but she was dead, Argus was programmed to find the next in line, you. To warn you of a terrible threat that has occured. While I was carrying on my fathers work to make androids something went terribly wrong. They malfunctioned and were somehow infused with a energy that I have never seen before. They ran and took over a ship after slaughtering a town's population to acquire the vessel. They somehow became hybrids and I am unsure on their threat level. I managed to get away with the plans for my newest invention. A Mark I, AI canine Guardian Unit. He is the greatest of my inventions yet. When your Father and I last spoke, he mentioned he had two children, I programmed the Argus to seek you out on the event I died. If your receiving this message then I am infact dead. As my last act of goodness to my name and my father's name, I have given Argus the Coodinates to your Father's location. As well as Tactical information on the Hybrid Androids. Argus, is my greatest friend and now he is yours. I swore to your father I would protect you and sense I am dead and cant do it, I have sent Argus to do it for me. Hilliard opened his Hub for the first time, Though not really under great circumstances. He had a feeling that these yellow alerts and such would happen often on this station, so he worked again on his decorations, securing them as best he could without making it look bad. Russ never liked the word 'decorations' as it sounded too femenine for what he was putting up. He took special precautions for his automobile parts.
Business was slow at the moment, just two people came in so far. So he started thinking, about how he regretted losing his three closest friends, his brother Mike, his best friend William, and his dog Samson. All had died while he escaped in a rogue Orion pirate attack , but their ingenuity only went so far.
The four of them were in a freight business together, and in the attack both Sam and Mike were killed instantly, while a plasma-burned Will beamed Russ off at his dying breath. Hilliard managed to create a distress beacon from his old 2300's era communicator. When he was rescued, he took up the bar because it was far from the attack and re doing the freight business left too many memories. It was all behind him now, he was getting a new dog after the Concordia's mission, from a litter in a nearby colony. They were real earth canines he was told, and he was looking forward to it.

Sonak had never served aboard a station before and was looking for weaknesses that a attacker could exploite. This is a well built station he thought. Even though he was impressed with the efficienty of the tactical systems he found a weakness in the sheilds that starfleet overlooked. The shield frequency rotation could be predicted even when randomized. When Voyager (NCC 74656) traveled through the delta quandrant Captain Janeway discovered basically how the Borg sheilded their sensitve equipment beyound thier inner hull. He found it a logical randomization algorithm. He decided to speak with the Captain about changing it.

It will take me several minutes give QAI authorization to allow for a tractor beam to temporarily lock onto the shuttle's shields and tow it out of the area or into the shuttle bay. Of course, that risks the possibility of the Borg tractoring the shuttle. However, it would still take several minutes to authorize a transporter beam if you want to try to beam the shuttle to your shuttlebay. It was a safety feature devised by me...unfortunately, it's working against us right now, but there is nothing we can do. So how do you want to proceed, Commander?"

"That is correct. My master who is dead now, programmed me to reactivate after a time and went in search for his friends children who is infact Karrath and his sister. My master who is now dead, downloaded those images that Karrath's father was alive, into my memory banks almost a year ago. The chances his father is still alive today is unknown. You see, my creator felt that after his last communication with Karrath's father, which was a day before he was captured and thought to be dead, Karrath's father asked my creator to protect his children, but my creator died before he could fully accomplish his promise to Karrath's father, so he created me to fulfil that promise now. Unfortunately, only one person in this entire galaxy could give you the clearance to read my files - and probably won't - so you're just going to have to be happy with what I tell you myself. And as much as I would like for you to come with me to my shuttle, Commander, we would still face the problem of me needing to give QAI the authorization to let you though."

"There is an alternate solution though, Commander. If you were to manuever your ship so that the shuttle bay is facing the shuttle, I could use the shuttle's manuevering thrusters to push the shuttle into the shuttle bay. Though I have to mention, you're going to have to get rather close. The shuttle running off emergency power and can't go very far. I'd say, five thousand kilometers to be safe."

"Lets just destroy the shuttle, it will save everyone alot of trouble. Not to mention, if the Borg gets their hands on the shuttle they become more of a pain in the arse, but if we get our hands on the shuttle, guess what we will destroy ourselves to understand it, either way we are screwed. So let me lock on a few torpedo's to the darn thing and destroy it. It will save us all the trouble of fighting over it." Urban said as his console beeped.

"Borg sphere dropping out of Transwarp......AND! their firing." Urban said as the Borg weapons fired on the Concordia, sparks flew everywhere and Urban grabbed his console to keep his balance while he brought the ship to red alert and returned fire. He also remodulated the shields every 5 seconds to keep the borg from adapting.

Brackman frowned at Urban's suggestion and was about to reply when the ship shook. Brackman managed to keep his balance by grabbing onto the seat.

After a moment, he said, "Just so you know, Lieutenant, QAI is a sentient AI. With his primary processors onboard the shuttle, destroying that shuttle would cripple him. It would be as if I put you in a vegetative state - you'd still be alive, but you'd be severely impaired. I'm certain Starfleet regulations have rules about attacking a sentient being unprovoked."

The ship took another hit, shuddering violently from the impact. Brackman paused briefly before continuing.

"Also, as a sentient being, QAI does have self-preservation instincts. He won't exactly let you destroy him at your whim and he won't be happy that you tried to do so either. And believe me, when QAI isn't happy, you want to be lightyears away. Besides, what kind of Starfleet officer takes the easy way out?"

The ship shook again, this time harder. Sparks flew from all around, brightening the darkened bridge briefly before disappearing. On the viewscreen, the Borg sphere nimbly manuevered though the asteroid field, continually firing on the ship as it did, all the while making its way toward the shuttle.

"We don't have much time, Commander. The sooner you make a decision, the sooner we can get out of here."

I would do the same with any organic being in similar circumstances. I never once said anything about trying to crack you open. You did however stir up emotional responses in commander Karrath and he responded in kind with a threat of phaser fire, it isn't logical because the nature of organic emotion is inherently illogical." She cleared her throat before continuing.

"Argus, it is not against our prime directive to have a few scans run to confirm you are exactly what you say you are. Just as it is not against the prime directive for a Betazed counsilor to tell their captain if a person is lying or not. What was suggested was to have our engineers check you out to confirm this in the same form of matter. There is no need to pull you apart to tell if your program is what you say it is. Infact there isnt even any physical contact needed at all. So if you are indeed the sentient being as you claim to be, and you truely are here to protect the Commander here, then surely you should want to allow us to simply runs a few scans to be on the safe side."

Something was wrong and the Daniel knew it. First there was this odd feeling that the atmosphere about him had suddenly changed. It was getting harder to breath and the vessel rocked back and forth forcing him to grab hold of the shelf in front of him. This was the young Ensign's first experience with a real situation in which the need for such measures was needed. True, there were simulation drills designed to prepare him for the inevitable event but it still came to him as a surprise.

As the rooms lights flashed and orders to evacuate Deck five repetitiously sounded his skin turned as pail white and a look of concern crossed his face. For a moment, his conscious effort to block his empathic abilities weakened enough to realize he was not the only crewmember experiencing such emotions.

"Oh no," he thought, "where is Dr. David"

Quickly he regained command of his Betazoidian abilities and his thoughts. Daniel began to think threw the procedures necessary in under such conditions. He was already on duty and in a storage area just off of sickbay when startling interruption brought him from his methodical inventory of medical supplies to the harsher reality of an emergency aboard the vessel. He moved towards the door and familiar hiss of the door opening revealed the ward was vacant and he was the only sentient still occupying the area.

Looking about he absently reached for the medical recorder that was always present on his hip. It was there as always and he sighed with relief. His was special unit with the added features necessary he required if he was to be able to diagnose with it. Being completely illiterate was more than a problem; it was a nescience he had come to accept as a part of his existence. Fortunately, him he had found numerous ways to avoid detection and ways to accomplish the same necessary functions as reading. There were those who had already been informed of his learning disability and the explanations as to why he required his own recorder as much as his own communication badge.

His ward was surprisingly empty of patients and for that he was grateful. Ensign Daniel Elbrun knew the deck was being sealed off. He quickly grabbed one of the cases used by away teams to be ready for a medical emergency then boarded a near by turbo lift and prepared to evacuate to another deck but without explicit instructions from either the Captain or a fellow medical officer he was at a loss as to where. He was aware that the mess hall was often used in cases like this and so made the assumption that that is where he needed to go.

"Computer," he asked quickly, "has there been any orders as to where sickbay is . . . to . . be re-relocated to?"

His words came harder as his ability to get enough air into his lings increased in difficulty. Now, with his faculties temporarily reduced do to lack of oxygen he would be forced to make a decision. If they were the wrong there may be reproductions.

"Sickbay is reassigned to the mess hall," the familiar, unaffected voice returned.

"Mess Hall Please," Daniel said and he felt the lift move.

It was a habit of his to speak politely to everyone, even if what he was speaking to was inanimate. He waited anxiously for the lifts door to reopen and when they did he headed straight for the familiar gathering hall hoping to find a superior officer that might be able to give him some direction.

U.S.S, Concordia

Ensign Elbrun's deep blue eyes darted about the unusually vacant corridor. With the intermittently flashing red lights and the pulsating sounds that met his ears it was an eerier experience for the young half Betazoind. He regained his breath and stepped through the sliding doorway of the mess hall and peered about hoping someone, anyone that might have more experience at such events might be there to guide him.

Nearly as quickly as he had arrived the first of the wounded stumbled through the door, an Ensign light himself holding his wounded left hand with his right. His uniform indicated he was from engineering and from the looks of the object protruding from his hand the young red headed human had tried to steady himself against a console only to find part of the hard surface shattered into his hand.

"Here," Daniel offered helping the young man to a chair near the doorway, "I'll take a look at that."

"Oh thanks," the officer replied with more of a grimace than a smile.

The sandy haired half Betazoid sat the case down he was carrying and began to examine the wounded hand with his medical tricorder waving the small cylindrical reader over the affected area. The injury was only a flesh wound and despite the rapid blood loss it would be remedied rather simply without too much pain. He knelt down so he could get closer to the patient and placed the medical device on a near by seat. Next to it he placed the medical kit and opened it. The medical officer returned his attention to the patient and prepared to gently remove the superficially inserted object.

"I'm Ensign Daniel O'Mannin sir," he offered looking at his patients, "this might hurt a little."

"McCay," the man replied with a nod indicating both his last name and his recognition of the impending trauma he might experience.

"Ready," Daniel questioned and then plucked the dark colored object quickly from the mans hand.

The engineering officer sighed with relief, "that did't hurt much," he said with a smile.

"Thanks," the half Betazoid replied applying pressure with his left hand and retrieving the vascular regenerator from the case.

He activated the device with one skilled movement and began the processes of repairing the damage. As he continued his task the door hissed open and the rest of the medical staff began to filter in, most absent of patients but a few guiding in the wounded and taking up positions within the large room.

"There," Daniel said with a nod, "should be fine now Ensign McCay."

The man smiled and offered his sincere gratitude, "thanks," he said, "Havn't seen you before, are you new?"

"Yes, first day on duty," O'Mannin replied trying to be as friendly as possible, "perhaps we will run into one another again sometime."

As the two parted he looked about for a medical officer with a higher rank than his own to find how he might best be of service only to find none were too concerned in taking leadership.

"Computer," the half betazoid said, "please stabilize the lighting this room."

"Lighting stabilized," the female voice responded as the pulsating emergency lighting subsided and the standard lighting of the facility too over.

"Now," he said to himself, "what's next?"

Naquv heard the assistant tactical officer's words and instantly new it was up to him, as he was in charge of transporters. This is what his warrior and starfleet training prepared him for. It was only timing the transporters right, but the circumstances called for nearly perfect timing, no do-overs. He set a timer when Brackman said there was 20 seconds, now there was 9. Naquv had a premonition of a console exploding to his right as the timer hit zero. That is exactly the way it happened, but his foresight prepared him and he turned his back to the console and was right on, the transporter got the shuttle just at the perfect time.

Bridge - U.S.S. Concordia

As the Borg materialized onto the bridge, Brackman reached into one of his lab coat's pockets and took out something that resembled a phaser but was much bulkier and larger, turning as he did so to face the drones on the bridge.

As the bridge crew scrambled to respond, Brackman calmly fired on the other two drones that weren't being targeted by the crew. A series of blue bursts of light erupted from the modified phaser. Upon contact with the drones, the drones froze in place. A blue light encompassed the drones briefly before disappating. A moment later, their biological halves began to rapidly deteriorate. Brackman watched emotionlessly as the drones collapsed into dust, with their mechanical components falling to the floor with a small thunk and an occasional clang as two small piles of Borg parts accumulated on the carpet. The only drones that had survived intact were the ones the crew had fire upon, which there were several of.

"Hmph. I guess I should have set a lower setting," Brackman said to no one in particular, staring interestedly at one of the pile of Borg parts before looking at the phaser he held in his hand. "I think there's a stun setting somewhere here." Brackman began to fiddle around with the phaser, oblivious to what the bridge crew was doing and apparently unaware that he had just annihilated two Borg drones.

"Ah, here it is," Brackman said, with the phaser beeping as its setting changed. Looking up, he said, "So, we should be heading back to the station now, shouldn't we?"

Dwight looked to his left as the counsel began to spark again. "Damage repair now... I do not want to send any more of you to sickbay." He was not happy, the damage from the Borg sphere was more then he wanted.

However what drained his color from his face was the emotionless voice of the computer. "Intruder Alert, Intruder Alert, shuttle Bay two, Bridge, and Main Engineering."

He right away pulled his phaser off his belt as five drones materialized into the main lobby, while he heard some shouts above.

=A=BRIDGE, I NEED MARINES... I GOT AT LEAST SEVEN DRONES HERE!=A=

He stopped talking as he fired at the nearest drone only to have the shielding already adapted. "FALL BACK... DON'T LET THEM TOUCH YOU! COMPUTER BORG LOCK DOWN!" he was shouting at his men as they fell back to the core, the doorways already blocked by the Drones. He while talking had recalibrate his phaser and shot it again, one drone down, six to go.

He really hopped security would come. He noticed however that some of his men were already getting to some weapons lockers in engineering.

He finished another set, while backing up and fired again. A crewman also fired his phaser having been firing what was blanks, always hitting the shields and two more drones dropped.

However he noticed one drone already trying to bypass the shielding that where covering the controls along the entry way.

=A=We got a Borg trying to break into out computers... I really need some help.=A=

A voice shouted up top and he realized that there were still drones up top. He hopped help would come soon. "We got four up here... and Ensign Fish was just hit."

((Engineering, taking data that I observed from First Contact, would be one of the places the Borg would try to hit. Control anything from there. Just trying to be realistic, hope this is okay.))

Martin stumbles through the Sick bay's door, his cane falls to the floor. He has scorch marks on his normally impeccable uniform. He notices ensign O'Mannin

"Ensign, Borg have boarded the ship. I ran into a few; for as an advanced species, the damn things don't seem to understand the simple phrase, 'No, I don't want to join, be gone.'"

He presses a few buttons on the control panel near the door, but an arm reaches through as it's about to shut, it's a very Borg like arm.

"Bloody hell!" He tosses his extra phaser to the ensign and picks up his walking cane; he uses it as a blunt object to beat the arm back.

The door to the makeshift Sick bay opened as Daniel prepared to begin moving what furniture was present into a more agreeable arrangement for a medical facility. He raised his dark blue eyes and saw as an object clanked to the tiled floor and the science officer staggered unaided through the sliding doors that allowed entrance into the room. He saw instantly the darkened streaks left by some sort of flame that soiled the uniform and rushed to offer his aid.

As he began his approach, the newly arriving officer explained that the dreaded Borg hand finagled their arrival aboard their vessel and his encounter with their stubborn nature. Normally his words would have held a but more humorous a nature but not now, not while there was a threat to his patients, the crew or himself.

He watched as the superior officer pressed a few consol buttons to the side of the door. For the most part, he understood his actions but being he was so new to the vessel and had never met the man he was at a bit of a loss.

Before he could utter a word of protest thinking the officer intended to block the access to the room he saw the phaser being launched in his direction and took actions to catch it. His first attempt was a bit awkward and the weapon bounced upwards off the side of his left his right thumb. The Ensign thought quickly and as the device began its decent, he caught it readily. Daniel sighed and allowed a slight smile to cross his face.

Through the two metal partitions that served as the doorway an arm, slightly humanoid but encased in wires and metal was protruding. It hindered the closure and the science officer used his cane to assault the offending limb.

Another hand grasped the side of the door and began to pull the partition into the pocket it was designed for. Now Ensign O'Mannin was faced with a more direct view of the assailant. It was his first real encounter with such a creature. To be honest it was his first real experience with an armed and dangerous intruder. To be sure there were many drills and holographic simulations of such events but nothing could truly prepare the young officer for such an event.

"Stand back sir," he ordered forgetting protocol for the moment and then fired on the oddly wired intruder.

His aim was dead on, only problem was the personal shielding of the borg had adjusted to the weapons frequency and only a slight jolting could be viewed in the creature. A moment later, it stood within the doorway raising his own weapon to eliminate the medical officer.

Daniel had already began to fumble with the settings. He managed two things, first to change the frequency and to change the power level of the weapon. In his haste he was not sure weather either were correct. To be truthful the young officer rather disliked weapons of any kind. He had gone through his training successfully and managed to earn high marks for his accuracy and skill but that did not sway his opinions regarding them and violence in general.

He fired again and this time fell to his left knee hoping to throw off the borg's aim and to steady his own. The shot was successful striking the creature squarely on his head, a mark higher than the chest O'Mannin was aiming for. Still, the borg fell with a gratifying thud to the floor at the science officers feet. He was not sure the creature was dead or if there were others so he stayed at his position, the weapon aimed at the fallen creature and waited to see what would happen.

(Ooc: just for clarification Sick Bay has temporarily been reassigned to the Mess Hall. Deck 5 has been evacuated and sealed off. you may decided the extent of damage I inflicted on the borg and whether there are more we need to address.)

The young officer glanced over at the science officer. He was so knew he had not met most of the crew. Even higher ranking officers were not yet acquainted with him and he wondered how the Lieutenant had known he could even fire the phaser let alone hit something with it.

"Lieutenant sir," he said returning his gaze back the now unmoving borg, "are you injured, sir."

Not waiting for a proper reply he carefully laid his medical tricorder down with his left hand keeping the phaser at the ready in his right.

With his now free hand he tapped the communication badge on his uniform and began to speak, "Ensign O'mannin to security, we have a borg here in the mess hall."

He stood to his feet and began walking over to the yet unidentified, at least to Daniel, Science officer. The Ensign kept an eye on the downed enemy, he advanced not wanting to give the half humanoid, half machine an opportunity to cause further harm.

The sound from the red alert alarms wafted in heavily to the make shift sick bay and made the young officer a little more on edge than he already was.

"We should be hearing from security soon sir," he offered with a nod, "I can't exactly run triage with a borg looking me in the eye." He let a sly smile cross his face then as quickly as it came it vanished again, "If it is acceptable to you Lieutenant, I will be happy to examine you once they have arrived."

Concordia: Mess hall/Engineering

The young Ensign almost blushed as he remembered the weapon he possessed was only a loan, offered to him by the superior science officer. He began to hand the phaser over to the Lieutenant and nodded, "I should return this sir," he said and handing it over careful not to let the weapon misfire.

"We need someone to move the borg, at least what's left of it," he said almost absent mindedly but two of his colleagues sprang to work to move the lifeless form from before the portol.

"Ensign O'Mannin sir, at your service," he offered just before the message the word of injured in Engineering and Science reached them.

"Looks like formal introductions will have to wait," he said with a chuckle, "Apologies sir."

To his right now stood Ensign Sperrin, a female human with long dark tresses. She offered him the tricorder he had abandoned on the Mess Hall floor not moments before. "Thank you," O'mannin offered quickly.

With his next breath he began dividing the staff, "Girvan, Mullen and you," Daniel said referring to Sperrin, "were going to Engineering. Humphrey and Maddox you go to the shuttle bay department."

He made the orders as if he was the superior officer and in some ways he was, but he could not help but notice the looks from some of the officers not attempting to mask their disapproval. Some felt they should be giving the orders, after all, Daniel had not been assigned to the ship in the usual manor, nor was he present for the first roll call for that matter. He had no experience as an officer aboard a ship and it was his first post yet his training before being accepted to Starfleet was substantial compared to any they possessed.

The title of Doctor, although allowable based on the degrees he had achieved before his acceptance as a cadet, was not something he cared to relish in. He had chose not to mention it at all when he first saw his commanding officer and to his knowledge, no one really knew it. What he was lacking was not head knowledge but experience. In an effort to impress his way into the academy he met every defeated request with the only ammunition he knew of, knowledge. When the refused him the first as a counselor he already possessed a doctoral degree from a prestigious University in psychology. The second time he applied, he had added to it a second, this time in medical research. Then with the third one he added another PHD in advanced neurological sciences. The fourth time, and the one that finely got him accepted was in Medicine, a bit less sophisticated than his others but had been successful in convincing the acceptance committee he was a good candidate.

Even with such education they still required him to attend the academy simply because they wished to observe him and his abilities for themselves considering his severe learning disability and his unique medical and genetic makeup. To be sure, Ensign Daniel O'Mannin was gifted intellectually and socially in at least some respects, but he had to fight too and nail as the expression goes for every inch of progress he made. Though he could listen once to a book in an extremely short time and have it memorized being able to recall exactly what chapter and if mention in the reading what heading or subheading it had appeared, many feared that someone with as many issues as he possessed would make a less than desirable officer.

He returned the tricorder to his side and accepted the Emergency medical kit Humphrey offered with one hand and the emergency surgical kit with the other.

With both hands full he touched his com badge with the bent elbow of his left hand, " On our way," he offered, "Transporter room, requesting location to location transport for four to Engineering."

He vanished into a beam of energy along with his small group of medical personnel. The feeling of molecular transport when done conventionally was an exhilarating experience for Daniel but when done in this less traditional manor it always brought back memories of the tale concerning his father disappearance.

As they materialized within Engineering, he had to mentaly turn off his telepathic abilities. It seemed that every time he was faced with a new environment he had to consciously bring his Betazoidian inheritance under his control.

(Ooc: Sorry if it seems I am doing too much. If you wish me to edit I will be happy to do so.

(Ooc 2: The two medical officers sent to the shuttle bay and the thee with Daniel in Engineering can be puppeted by anyone. Danial for that matter can be puppeted seeing I am not sure I will be getting back on again to post before my vacation.

Brackman turned toward Shepard and said, "As your scans could and will tell you, my shuttle is badly damaged and is barely operational. Obviously, I do not have the necessary materials to repair it. Making anything from scratch would take too long and the extent of the damage would require too many spare shuttle parts, unless you keep enough to build one. As I probably have mentioned before, the only feasible option I see is to disassemble an operational one and use those parts to replace the damaged ones. How should we proceed?"

Naquv was just standing and respectfully listening to the doctor and the two starfleet officers. Since he just used the algorithm, Naquv decided to start making a new one while on the bridge. Making an algorithm was not for the indecisive, for at the start there were so many choices. Fractal, trinary, and geometric were just a few of the bases to start out with. then all of the steps had more choices. Naquv decided to do a fractal algorithm. He usually added at least one step per day until it was needed. The Concordia turned about to go back to Vernemeton, but the plan according to the Commander, was to completely secure the shuttle before going to warp.
Naquv asked Shepard, "Sir shall I go to impulse or stay at our current location until it is secure?"

"Sir, if l may. We have no way of knowing wether the borg sphere has broadcast it's position prior to its destruction. But we must assume that it did. Staying here, or anywhere close to here, is not logical, we have to move. Besides, sir, l'm still not sure as to how the borg knew we were here."

< if the shuttle is an intelligent entity > Mimas' thoughts continued < if it has a mind, it must be receptive to the Vulcan mindlink >

His heart grew warm with the memory of his Vulcan grandfather : < Oh sa'mekh'al, if l had only paid more attention to your teachings, maybe l would feel Vulcan enough to try kash-naf with a shuttle...>
Mimas figured, that when computers were that badly damaged, the logical thing to do was to shut them down, and reboot them when the proper equipment was available for repairs.
< even Humans put their own kind in a stasis, untill they can be treated > he thought, < and l sure that the doctor would be able to reboot the core processors, once we have arrived in the Station >

His thoughts were interrupted as his console bleeped:

"Sir, a damage report from engineering. Our warp-engines have suffered damage, but will be back online within minutes... "

"I believe there is an alternate method," Brackman said, "If I could have a spare computer core or something of similar processing power, I could transfer the shuttle's operations onto the computer core. Mind you, it would be temporary. QAI could give you a more accurate time, but my guess is that the substitute would only last a few hours at best. It would be enough time to get back to the station hopefully. Worst case, we won't make it back to the station in time and my shuttle will be sitting in your shuttlebay for a few days."

"As for your equipment, I don't believe clearance is our highest priority at the moment. However, I have a message that's signed by the President of the Federation and the Starfleet Chief of Staff that gives me access to any materials I should require. Part of the package they gave me after I was - " Brackman abruptly stopped speaking. After pausing for a moment, he countinued, "Anyhow, I'll should you that message if you believe you or anyone else needs to see it. Clearance won't a problem. Verifying it won't be either, though it would take some time. We are in the Delta Quadrant after all."

As a further security measure we could sever any links to the main computer core and give it a seperate power source so it can exist in its own little world and it wont have access to the ships primary systems. Upon hearing Urban's suggestion, Brackman snapped back to reality and replied, irritated, "I would appreciate it if you at least tried to pretend that you didn't hold artifical intelligences in such contempt, Lieutenant. Just because something is not made of flesh and blood doesn't make it any less sentient. In any case, I was actually suggesting something smaller, more portable, that would fit into the shuttle, so that after it's connected and the operations transferred, the shuttle could then be moved however you wanted into the shuttle bay. That way, the situation would be solved without severely compromising security."

Brackman briefly laid a cold look at Urban. The boy was a little too eager to destroy something he didn't understand for Brackman to like and the way he said 'organic patient' unsettled Brackman. He was becoming concerned over how the Federation view sentience.

Ignoring Urban's statement about his temper, as Brackman wasn't the one who just had an almost violent outburst, and at the same time deciding not to point out where Urban's statements were flawed, Brackman shifted in his seat so that he could talk to Shepard more comfortably.

"Since I apparently have no choice in the matter, you can proceed as you see fit, Commander. I do have one small condition, however - that no one, but me should be allowed in my shuttle. Much of its contents are classified, no matter what state they're in. On that one matter, I cannot and will not give into," Brackman paused for a moment and added softly, "by both orders and by choice." His face briefly looked very weary and pained, before he recomposed himself. He looked again at the PADD he had in his hand.

Commander Shepard - Bridge

"That's fine," he said. "I would like to post security in the shuttle bay, but none of them will enter the shuttle." Shepard tapped his communicator. "Bridge to Lieutenant Dwight. We're going to be taking both Dr. Brackman's shuttlecraft and his AI onboard. I need you to isolate the secondary computer core from the rest of the ship, and prepare it to be infused with the AI's matrix. Make any preparations and keep me apprised. Shepard out."

As Shepard prepared to bring Brackman's shuttle onboard, Brackman put away the PADD in his hands and began to press on the panels on his wrist device. After a few minutes, he said to it, "QAI, transfer your primary operations to the secondary computer core when it is prepared and then enter sleep mode as soon as you calculate how long the core would last with you operating in sleep mode."

Brackman then said to Shepard, "Something that you'd probably like to know, Commander - the chance that your computer core will survive sustaining QAI unscathed is relatively low. The core will begin to slowly overload as soon as the transfer is complete. It won't explode if we don't push it to the limit, but it will probably begin to deteriorate as the overload builds up. At some point, it will become too badly damaged to repair. Hopefully we don't reach that point - I don't know if you'd like to be in drydock for that kind of maintenance."

"Captain, I suggest also we disarm Brackman of his weapon and have the shuttle scanned for any other weapons he may have hidden onboard, I am not going to have this ship compromised by poor security. This is after Brackman issues orders to his QAI to drop any defenses it may have or armor it may have to prevent sensor sweeps." Urban began to force the issue for more security measures to be taken before Brackman even goes near his shuttle.

=^= "Security team Alpha, post security inside and outside the shuttle bay where Brackman's shuttle is at, phasers at the ready." =^=

Dwight only smiled and his voice showed an eagerness. =A=Thank you sir, I will get right on it... on moving van AI storage container coming up... I hope the AI likes his temporary abode sir, I just hope we can keep the AI going until we can move him or her to a more sustainable location, the Secondary Core is meant for back up, so I do not know how much we will last with it. Dwight out. =A=

He moved to exit the room, pulling with him three men that he read where good at what task they were about to perform. He stopped though and tapped the badge again. =A=Could you send the inventor down? I do not have access to any files on his creation so I would like him to help with the process, besides I wouldn't be surprised if he checked our jirry rig before the transfer happened, so I would like to cut a few steps and just have him helping along.=A=

He didn't think about security issues, since he had not meet the man himself, he thought he would be a starfleet officer anyway... but he just hoped that they could get this working asap, the core needed his attention as well.

He shook his head. A ships engineer's day is never truly over.

Commander Shepard - Bridge

Shepard turned to face Urban. "Lieutenant, Dr. Brackman is a Federation citizen and a guest on our ship. I believe he's true to his word, and I expect you to give him your full cooperation, not stand in the way of everything. Scans will be limited to exterior only, to check for damage. The rest of the contents of the shuttle are classified, and we're not going to be taking one step inside that shuttle."

"Never said going inside, Captain. Nor implied it. I said, Sensor Sweeps. Hence the ship has internal sensors, my station has sensor readings all across the ship infact. I can use them to scan for weapon signatures of a hand held purpose without setting foot inside." Urban said but was tempted to tell him to go see the doctor for a hearing exam, but didnt.

Ian shrugged one shoulder. "Regardless, the contents of that shuttle are for eyes more important than ours. Restrict the scans to exterior damage only."

"Thank you, Commander. Now, I believe my assistance was requested by Lieutenant Dwight. Where is the secondary computer core located? Lieutenant Urban, if you believe an escort is necessary, by all means assemble one. I'm sure it was on your mind the moment I stepped onboard."

Brackman prepared to stand up once Urban had his escort ready. He folded his hands on his lap, patiently waiting. All the while, however, his mind continued to run, continuing to try to find solutions to the numerous problems that plagued his work.

"Mimas you have tactical. Ill escort Brackman personally." Urban said and just then two security officers came onto the bridge.

"Brackman, lets go." Urban said moving from his station and Mimas taking over. Urban and Brackman along with the security escort left the bridge by way of the turbo-lift.

Concordia-Turbo Lift

"Nothing personal, Brackman. But I learned along time ago never trust scientists sense they are usually the ones who come up with the virus's that wipe out planets." Urban said with malice contempt for Brackman.

~Memories of his parents, brothers and sisters dieing by a virus flooded into his mind as he witnessed his family and friends being ravaged by a plague scientists came up with to supposedly help the population of Antiga Prime but instead killed them. The memories of the fallen dead slumped on the ground haunted him to this day. He remembered that he was the sole survivor of his city. He remembered he went to sleep from exhaustion and when he re-awakened he saw he was in a room full of other survivors of the plague.~ Urban remembered in his head.

Turbolift, U.S.S. Concordia

Brackman replied softly, "Problems come from how people use science, not science itself, Lieutenant. But sometimes things are just beyond anyone's control, however much we dislike it."

The turbolift soon stopped and the doors opened, revealing the secondary computer core. Several officers were there already, working on the consoles scattered throughout the room. Brackman and his security escort, including Urban, stepped off the turbolift.

"Dwight is everything in order for the transfer of the Shuttles QAI." Urban said in a more friendlier manner then he did with Brackman.

<Urban walked over behind Dwight and watched the console he was working on even if he did understand only half of it>

"Dwight, Brackman is here as you requested." Urban whispered into Dwight's ear.

<Then Urban motioned for Brackman to come over and then motioned for the security team to hold their position>
