Hal fired a printout at Balkazar.  "Done." He said, as 100 pages hit the floor, with miniscule text printed on them, and in common language, otherwise known as English.  "Oh, and I also have a magnifying glass should you require one." Hal said, sliding one from under his wheel.

*Fleet Captain Archer enters the student activity center in his search for Cadet Dotson.*

Ah, there you are. This morning I saw Mr. Tuvix again, I contacted him to check if he still wants to teach here at the Academy. I haven't had a reply from him yet, but I'm sure that won't take long.

In the mean time I will teach you some basics about tactical and security. Please meet me in Classroom 1 tomorrow.

*Archer walks out of the SAC on his way to the Flag Admiral's Office.

"I'd like a plate of club crackers and colby jack cheese and a glass of water, please."
*The waiter delivers the food and Bart opens the book and begins reading, munching on a cracker.*

Ardeth meandered in, carrying Hal, his hand made robotic Cadet.  "You know, Ardeth, you can put me down now.  I'm perfectly capable of motion." Hal said, spinning 3 wheels eagerly.  "Only if you swear not to show off that Webcam Laser." Ardeth said, placing Hal, who was only about 2 feet tall, and looking like an old IBM computer from the 20th century, on the floor.  Hal jumped to life, bouncing along on springy wheels.  "Everyone, meet Hal!" Ardeth declared, pointing to the little Rogue Unit.  Hal said, "Hello, Everyone!" and spun in circles, then darted around in circles before zooming off to meet the Vulcan.  Raising his simple grabber arm to shake hands, Hal said, "Nice to meet you.  I'm Hal!" and then retracted the grabber into the monitor, zooming off to Hermes. "Hello!  My name is Hal!" and then zoomed off again, trying to stir up a conversation from someone.  "Hal!  Calm down!  You are acting like a 2 year old!"  Ardeth hissed, to be replied with, "Well I've only been functioning for 2 years!  Course, with the wisdom and knowledge I possess, I should act a little older.  But first let me meet everyone!"

*Cadet Kawolsky hands Cmdr Balkazar his essay. It reads:*

---------------------------------------------------------
How to survive on a planet similar to Earth
---------------------------------------------------------
Cdt Kawolsky
--------------------

Assuming that i am part of a landing party that has crash landed on the planet and that i am the most senior officer there, i would first make sure that everybody thatwas in the landing craft was OK. I would then assess the immediate area and determine where possible shelter might be located and where sources of food may be found.

Throughout the time i was on the planet i would appear strong in from of the other lower ranking officers/crewman but i would consult my second in commmand for his/her opinion should be included in my desicion making.

Once suitable shelter has been found, i would allocate tasks to each member of the party. I would make sure that each person did a job that they are suitable for and that everything gets done properly. My primary concern, after shelter, would be food. I would organise a hunting team to gether food (animal or plant) so that the party may eat. I would ration food unless a permanent source of food is located. I would keep this routine up until we were rescued and i would make sure that everyones hopes are up during this time.
-----------------------------------

"What do you think, sir?"  Kawolsky asked

Hal stopped computing his next move, and then noticed something wasn't right.  He just blew it off, and continued, waiting as long as it would take.  Hal's speaker chirped once, and then Hal made his move. Moving his queen, he made sure that Pfakkert's bishop couldn't harm him.  "Your move." Hal said, taking the bishop.

Hal mumbled, "I didn't work on Ardeth's essay for him.  He typed it in rather decent sized font.  It's the last 2 pages of my mess." Ardeth looked at Hal and said, "I'm glad you told the truth about that.  I had known of this essay 2 minutes ahead of time, and used Hal's wireless keyboard to get it finished.  I made sure to type it in a civilized font," Ardeth said, glancing at Hal, who's usually white grinning face went pink, "unlike Hal, who chose a really small font.  Even if I had his magnifying glass, I couldn't decipher this.  Not to mention I scolded him for his cheeky little joke of Binary Code Essays."

Nice to meet you, Hal.. I like a firm handshake!pfakkert said after quickly pulling his arm back.
Did anyone see that it was a bit too firm?, I don't want to look less strong than the marine guys!pfakkert thought.
It reminds me that you robots have much more strength than us Romulans. I do remember working with a pair of robotarms once. Really nice , gives you the feeling that you are invincible!
But..talking about invincible, can you show me how this chess-game works? It's a human game so it can't be very difficult! Can it?

So, you're working on a little of everything?  Or are you focusing mostly on command courses?  I would like to get an all around education eventually, but I just want to focus mainly on Tactical and Security fields for now, just to get out into space as soon as possible.  I was thinking of heading out to the GreyWolf Division when my training is complete.

Title: Student Activity Center
Post by: Danok on February 02, 2006, 10:32:01 PM
Danok ahhs.

"Simply because to do so would be illogical.  On Vulcan my primary interests lay in the area of close and ranged combat, narrowly coming out over positronic circuitry and time-space theorum.  However, if one looks at the fact that there are many of my race involved in those areas, and at the fact that being Vulcan I am naturally appoximately three times stronger than any human counterpart, such as you my fellow cadets, and the fact that my skills are most developed in combat and combat-related areas, it would be logical that I should become something with a primarily combat role.  Vulcan peacekeeping forces did not show an especially promising future, and it therefore is only logical that I should join the Federation's Marines.  I realize I may indeed be the only Vulcan to date to be involved in such a thing, but I do not see this as a setback."

Hal noticed he was grabbing Pfakkert's hand harder than was needed, and released, retracting the arm. "Hal is merely sentient life.  He can translate, run programs, duel you in chess, and many other things.  He's just like you or I, just in a smaller body with wheels." Ardeth said.  "Merely!  I'm shocked!  I'd have thought you would have said something a little nicer!"  Hal said, offended.  "I'm sorry, Hal, it's just that, in the 'game' of life, all beings, sentient or not, are merely in existence here.  You may not be large, you may not even be like Data, but you are the best dang friend anyone could have.  You don't speak secrets, you learn once, and remember forever, and you can even match a player's skills in Chess, making a much formidable opponent!  I've beaten you 2 times out of the 100 you've played against me.  I think you should challenge someone else for a little game, and then try to have some intelligent conversation with someone besides me or Balkazar.  You know very well that you learn from speaking.  As for your little anger problem, keep it controlled!"

Hal aimed his grabber arm, loaded it with a bunch of garbage, and fired it across the room, splattering it in the wastebasket.  Hal then tumbled off the table, and landed on the wheels, speeding around and prodding people with that hard keyboard right into the ankles!  "Anyone wanna play a game with me?  Anyone?  C'mon, I'm bored here!" Hal said, spinning in circles now.

*After half an hour of writing, Cdt Kawolsky produces his answer. It reads:*

--------------------------------------------------------
Q: How would you deal with first contact?
--------------------------------------------------------
Cdt Kawosky
--------------------

If i knew that i was going to be meeting a new species, I would research their cultures and traditions in detail so as not to offend them when it came to the meeting.

If i did not know beforehand that I would be interacting with a new species, I would be as polite as I could in an attempt to establish a good relationship with  them which would aid in future diplomatic efforts.

If the new species was hostile, i would do all i could to protect my ship and crew, and if that meant firing on the other vessel in defence, then that is what I would do. I would put the lives of my crew before anything else, including first contact.

Hall!! Can you come over here for a second? I have a question and am ready for the next move!
First of all, what is checkmate? Does that mean that I cannot move the most important piece anymore,Hal?
And.. can I form an alliance with Ardeth? Or are alliances not allowed in a chessgame?
Well, luckely it's only 'check' , so maybe I can still do something and not be humiliated.
Ensign pfakkert was about to spill his drink over Hall, hoping he would short-circuit when he saw that by moving a pawn two places forward, it was standing between his king and the peice that had just 'eliminated' his queen!
pfff, saved for this moment, pfakkert thought

Hal reentered, 3 wheels squealing as he crashed through the door.  "Oopsie!" he exclaimed, sounding like something special.  He didn't know that Ardeth could possibly be in a good mood, and decided to sneak to his favorite place.  Hal was slinking behind people, and screaming, "HELLO!" at the highest volume setting he had.  He then darted away.

Ensign pfakkert walks into the student activity center and sits down at one of the tables. The room is empty.  Shall I walk to the replicator and have a cup of tea, he thinks..?  He walks to the replicator and orders a cup of tea. After sitting down and taking his padd, he start reading about the 'rules of diplomacy'  I'm really hoping to get my first diplomacy testcase soon. Isn't it exiting!, I'm really at the academy!!

Manach enters the room for a moment, clearly looking for someone.  Not finding them, he leaves again without a word.

Hal moved lightning fast, capturing the queen, and placing Pfakkert's king in Check!  "Check.  Now you need to get out of trouble.  3 moves till Checkmate if gameplay continues like this." Hal said, being generous to let Pfakkert know he can change it.  Hal then gave Pfakkert an advantage, deciding not to be evil and try to block him with a Bishop.  "Your move." Hal said, waiting.  Hal noticed that he left a really sticky spot to get into if Pfakkert got out of the death hold Hal had on him.  A bishop was in line with a pawn, and after that, was his Queen.  He would remedy this problem next turn.

Manach hands in his essays.

If I were stranded on an earth-like planet, I would first make a patrol of the surrounding area.  If it is secure from hostiles, then (provided I was there due to a shuttle or ship crash) I would search the wreckage for anything useful.  Then I would take inventory of everything and have my men erect shelters.  That done, I would attempt to construct a communications device to contact starfleet while seeting my men out in a security perimeter.  Food could be easily obtained by the surrounding wildlife.  This is all provided I was stranded away from civilization.

First contact is an extremely delicate subject.  I would be very careful to learn everything possibly available on the species.  Many species have things which they would consider offensive if misscomunicated.  I would be sure to show no signs of agression, however I would also have defensive systems ready to power on in a moment should the species turn out to be hostile.  It would be important to make them feel both welcome and not threatened.

"Sir, when I graduate, which I hope to be as soon as possible, I would like to assume a security position, either on Starpheonix or somewhere else--preferably near the front lines."

Right, This can't be very difficult.
We've got a similar game on Romulus but with an oval board and the pieces represent the members of the senate.
It's played by four Romulans and the goal is to make alliances and use tricks and betrayal to get rid of your opponents. The one that wins will recieve the honour to keep the 'EMPEROR' piece at home until the next match.
Unfortunatly I have never had that honour.. Everytime I play my diplomacy and mediation skills spoil the game for me. But...enough talk, Ensign pfakkert places one of the pawns two places forward and after a short time the board is filled with chesspieces.
The first piece is about to fall.
Aai, I hope Hall does not see that I forgot to cover my queen that is now being treatended by one of his rooks; pfakkert thinks.

Hal slammed through the doors again, entering, and leaving a trail of grease inside the room.  This led all the way to Classroom 1.  "Da*n it!  I hate when Ardeth does this, and All I did was forget one little spot on the wall and he yells at me!  I'll show him!" Hal screamed, knocking a chair over hatefully.  He then screamed in rage again, and threw a fit.

After a bit of reading , ensign pfakkert took a look at some of the other cadets that were in the Activity center.
There was an impressive Marine recruit at the other side of the room together with a Vulcan.
Some of the other students were human cadets that had also just arrived.
Shall I walk up to them and start a conversation?
Suddenly Ensign pfakkert's padd makes a sound and starts to light up. Aaah, my first Diplomacy test case!!!

"Trust me, I can make it difficult.  It's simple.  All you have to do is move the pieces according to where they can move." Hal activated the Chess Program, and sent out a simple hand help pointing device.  "These pieces," Hal said, pointing at the rooks, "can move in straight lines, but not diagonals.  The knights move 3 squares, then 1 square at a 90 degree angle.  Pawns move 2 squares to start, and then one after.  They attack by going sideways.  Bishops move diagonally, and only diagonally.  Queens move in any direction, and like Rooks and Bishops, aren't restricted by numbers.  The king can move 1 square, any direction.  Ready?" Hal said, a chessboard crackling to life. "Use the handheld device I have provided to move the pieces.  Just move, point, and push the little button, then move the piece." Hal said, reading his hard drive for the right kind of pieces.  He settled on old fashioned black and white.  Course, he could also pull a rotten little trick and become one wicked chess player in the middle of the game.  "I warn you, though, I'm gonna get better after this game.  I'm a tad, well, out of practice."
