"I trust you have already contacted Orpheus and requested his permission to use the algorhythms of his programming?"

The young AI spoke with a very childlike speech matrix.

"hi mi nam is durandal. were am i?"

My prlogramming doesn't recognize your authortiy Mr Kaiser.  I dont have to answer you.  Howeverf if u must know, I have access to the same ai core hermes operates off.  I used that link to link in being that evoultion is in range of communications.

*looks at the ai* from this point of angle it seems it still needs alot of work.  But I give you fair warning. copy mine or hermes subroutines without permission and I'll lodge a complaint to the High command in breach of sentinent status.

"Oh, not again, Orpheus. We went over this the last time I was here. I would love to indulge your wishes, but Starfleet's orders supercede your wishes. As bureaucratic as this may sound, if you have a complaint, take it to the nearest Federation representative. Until then, this continues."

Admiral Fisher walks into Engineering his hands behind his back. Crewman Tyqel coming behind him. He walks to the Commander extending a hand.

"Hello Commander, Admiral Gary Fisher, Starfleet Engineering. This is my aid Crewman Tyqel. If you have time, their is something i would like to talk to you about. The same i will be speaking with High Command about."

*Suddenly, the voice of Hermes resounds in the room.*
"My apologies for the interruption. I would just like to announce that a party has started to celebrate the opening of a new store on the station's Habitat. All are welcome to stop by. Thank you, and you may now continue your business."

Kreiser and several associates walk into Computer Control, a sub-section of the Engineering department. Kreiser looks around for the head engineer present.

"Admiral Detrell? Commander Morrow? I'd like to speak with an engineer."

"Well, not exactly. He's out of contact right now, since the Rivendell is out on assignment, if I'm not mistaken. However, Starfleet Command has approved this project and wants this AI programmed as soon as possible. We do have a bare-bones version of Orpheus with us, which we will be basing the AI off of."

The team worked for two days, Kreiser went 36 hours straight. By the time he finally gave up, he had a basic matrix with personality subroutines installed. He pressed a button, and for the first time, activated the AI which was to be named "Durandal".

"Sure, I've got all the time you need, Admiral."

Tom takes Durandal offline for the time being.

"I'll be busy working here, on Durandal. I'll try to make i if I can, but I can't promise anything."

As Fisher leaves, Kreiser goes back to work.

"Mr. Detrell is not present, and Ms. Morrow has not yet returned to duty. Is there something I can help you with, Commander?"

"Well, we are going to be combining certain aspects from both your Corporation-based matrix and Orpheus' Starfleet matrix. But the new AI will need a father figure, since he will be young, after all. Your knowledge of artificial intelligence will also be very useful."

"Good. Now, as much as I would like to be able to just duplicate this Orpheus version and work from there, every time we tried that back at the Daystrom Institute, the AI de-rez'ed within days. Apparantly a clone of an AI suffers degradation in the primary subroutines when duplicated, so we'll need to start with just a duplicate of the matrix and build the subroutines from scratch."

"This is amazing! I've worked on AI's before, but I've never actually seen the birth of one!"

The ominous voice of Orpheus then resounds in the room.

"Orpheus? How did you get here?"

I demand an immediate halt to this unauthorised cloning while Flag Admiral Vorak is informed.  You will summon here immediatly.  Or may be forced to take uncessary actions.

"I'm sorry, but I don't recongize your authority. I have orders from Starfleet Command itself, so this project will continue. Durandal is now sentient. Halting the project would compromise the life of a sentient being, and you wouldn't want that, would you?"

"Now, Durandal, my name is Tom. This place is called Avalon Station."

Tom taps his commbadge.

"Admiral, you're welcome to have a look around, but right now, we're conducting the creaton of a new artificial intelligence. Seeing how this has only been dabbled in at the Daystrom Institute, I doubt there's much your team could do."

"I invite you and any staff or other officers on Avalon you might bring to Deep Space 20 for the Interceptor Conference. A meeting of CO's and Engineering officers from all around. As soon as you get the chance we don't know when everyone will be coming but we want to do this soon we're late in doing it. The building cannot proceed until we do. I must return to DS20 now if you wish to join me i will take you myself. My meeting with high Command is not possible i assume. Hope you will come." Fisher leaves Engineering for his runnabout.

"Um, sure. I guess this pertains to you too, Hermes. The Starfleet Engineering Corps has asked me to come here to oversee the programming of a new AI for the Evolution. Seeing how you are an AI, I guess you could help out."

Hermes seems to hesitate for a moment.

"Very well. Far be it for me to contradict Starfleet Command," Hermes says, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

*goes sielnt for a few minutes while talking to hermes* Hermes oh learned one, isn't this the exact same reason for the vents prior and after my creation?  Perhpas the humans merely just do not respect us once more.  Perhaps it's time we showed them exactly how precious life is and what it means to have life.
