((OOC: Don't mean to be pushy, but where are the Na'jigat we are suppose to be fighting?  Or do they come in later?))

Lieutenant Dolan - Escape Pod Landing Zone, Gallifrey

Dolan used his escape pod's sensors to detect a group of Pelicans that were going to arrive in 15 minutes.  He relayed this information to the rest of the crew, who had finished preparing the area in case of attack.  The escape pod's consoles then started beeping urgently.  Dolan checked it and swore, as it showed a large group of Heraan approaching the escape pods, with an ETA of 5 minutes.  While Dolan was somewhat glad he decided to land of top of a hill, that strategic advantage wasn't worth much if the encampment was overrun.

Dolan quickly coordinated a general defense against the arriving Heraan and hoped that help would arrive soon.

Dolan was busy organizing the defense of the hill when phaser and plasma fire erupted just down the hill from where Dolan was standing.  When Dolan turned to gauge the situation, he let loose another stream of curses, startling the small group of people standing nearby.  He quickly gave orders to use the escape pods for cover while he himself rushed to the front lines, all the while wishing that Starfleet had a better command structure that allowed for greater flexiblity.  A high-pitched beeping sound notified Dolan than the Pelicans would arrive in 10 minutes.

Dolan took the phaser rifle he had found in the escape pod off his back and set it at maximum intensity before joining the front lines.  The Heraan were attempting to charge up the hill, but fortunately for the crew, they had no cover and were not too hard to pick out from the low grass that covered the hill.  Unfortunately, the Heraan were very durable and took quite a few hits to take down, giving them time to fire back and force the crew back.

As the minutes crawled by, the Normandy crew slowly retreated up the hill, thankfully with minimal casualties and very few severe injuries.  Even so, the Heraan were advancing rather quickly and Dolan knew that if the Pelicans didn't arrive soon, the crew would be overrun.  Another beeping sound caused Dolan to glance at the horizon and he breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the Pelicans approaching the hill.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

Dolan replied, "I believe those ships are either the ones mothballed by the Expansion Fleet or, as you said, ones sent by Starfleet.  In either case, it still adds up to more firepower for the fleet.  Though it seems harsh to say this, those ships can also be considered cannon fodder, as they will hopefully absorb enemy fire and take damage before the newer ships, giving the newer ships more time to fire and damage the enemy, assuming that the newer ships have better firepower.  In addition to that, the older vessels are somewhat more expendable than the USS Iroquois or one of those battlecruisers our allies have and so can be used to ram enemy vessels when they have taken too much damage to maintain structural integrity for much longer."

Dolan's console beeped and he turned to it.

"Captain, we should be arriving at Gallifrey within the hour.  Sensors can't pick up much yet, but there are quite a few ships in the system.  Sensors can't seem to identify if they are friend or foe yet.  I'll try to boost sensor power."

Dolan began inputting commands into his console and doing some other techical stuff to try and boost the sensors power.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

Dolan had taken off the marine armor he had donned for the duration of the mission and also stored his weapon away in the armory before heading back to the bridge and taking his station.  He would have to compile a report later  Soon after departing the planet, the ship arrived back at Avalon Station.

=/\= This is the USS Normandy to Avalon Station =/\=

We have completed our mission and would like to inquire if we have further orders before we dock.

Lieutenant Dolan - Command Vehicle, Heraani Border World

The marines' mortars bombarded the outer walls of the complex until there was a section that had a breach large enough for several people to go through.  After being signalled that the area near the breach was clear, Dolan decended from the command vehicle and joined the marines after checking he was armored and well-armed.  He gathered a small team to help him get to the secondary control room before charging in.

Lieutenant Dolan - Citadel of Adun

Dolan managed to gain the upper hand as the Heraan weakened, unable to sustain its ferocious beating on Dolan's impenetrable shell.  Dolan swung out just as the Heraan pulled back for another strike and managed to slide the khala through a thin slot in the Heraan's armor, pushing the khala straight though the Heraan's body.  Dolan calmly retracted the khala and turned back to the rest of the battle as the Heraan collapsed on the ground, dead.

Dolan turned just as the Heraan warmaster was killed by Taurik's strike before the captain collapsed himself.  He watched interestedly as his body was consumed in a pale blue glow, as it was somewhat reminent of quantum tunneling, before bowing his head in respect to the ascended Vulcan.  He soon raised his head, as the rest of the team had managed to get up and began to question one of the Gallifreyans as to what had happened.  Dolan soon realized that several of them had been rendered unconcious, though by what means, Dolan was uncertain.  The team soon made their way to the Citadel's entrance, where a company of marines were pulling up to in Pumas.  Dolan saw Colonel Balkazar poke his head from one of the Pumas and began questioning the same Gallifreyan Dolan had noticed ealier.

Lieutenant Dolan - Outskirts of Antioch, Gallifrey

Dolan nodded and repeated Balkazar's orders to the five closest marines, who followed Dolan to a Pelican that had not yet taken off.  Dolan relayed Balkazar's orders to the pilots and gave them new coordinates.  The Pelican took to the air, carrying the rescue team into the midst of the battle, near Balkazar's suggested deployment area.  Once the Pelican was close enough to the ground, Dolan and his team jumped off, allowing the Pelican to join in the fighting without delay.  In a matter of seconds, Dolan spotted two people donning the clothes of Starfleet Admirals, struggling toward the marine fortifications.

Dolan's team headed for them, covering them as well as they could as they ran to meet up with them.  The Admirals weren't doing too bad themselves though - they both had phasers in hand and were firing as they ran for cover.

"Lt. Dolan, at your service, Admirals," Dolan said as soon as the Admirals were within hearing range.  "My team will do our best to keep you safe.  I need any information you can provide about the location of the Gallifrey Council memb-"  Dolan then noticed four Gallifreyans and a Vulcan fighting fiercely a short distance away, slowly making their way toward Dolan's team.

"Nevermind, then.  It seems you're going to have to stick with me for a little while longer.  After we reach the Council members, a Pelican should arrive shortly to pick us up.  We'll be heading back for the marine encampment after that."  Dolan quickly sent the coordinates of the Council members to the closest Pelican, with orders to head for that location ASAP, before beginning to make his way to the Council members with his team in tow.

Lieutenant Dolan - Outskirts of Antioch, Gallifrey

Dolan waited anxiously for the Cardinal Virtue's crew and passengers to arrive.  The Heraan were running heavy patrols throughout the area, making it difficult for anyone to get through.

Lieutenant Dolan - Outskirts of Antioch, Gallifrey

Dolan moved quickly, knowing that there was an extremely small window of opportunity of getting all of the VIPs out of the combat zone without endangering the Pelican coming to their rescue.  Getting into the vicinity of the Council members was difficult due to the dense Heraan presence, but his team members managed to pierce a small hole in the Heraani lines, which the Council members used to escape the surrounding Heraan after cutting through several more Heraan to make the hole larger.

Dolan managed to catch up with them when they took refuge behind the remains of a Heraani transport to briefly recuperate.

"Lt. Dolan, at your service," Dolan said speedily, trying to keep an eye out for any approaching Heraan.  "Colonel Balkazar has sent me to extract you from the combat zone, deeming you critical personnel.  I've already made contact with the Admirals and a couple members of my rescue team are helping them hold out for now.  A Pelican will be arriving shortly at their location, so it would be best if we hurry there now."

Dolan whipped around as he saw a Heraan jump toward him and the Council members and fired at it repeatedly with his phaser rifle.  It fell to the ground, dead, at Dolan's feet.

"So are you ready to go?" asked Dolan.

Lieutenant Dolan - Main Controls, Escape Pod

=/\= Acknowledged, setting course there now. =/\=

Dolan relayed those coordinates to the rest of the escape pods.  Fortunately, most of the escape pods were by now in no danger of being attacked by the Heraan or their allies and they adjusted their course accordingly.

Dolan now relaxed somewhat, in order to assess the situation.  The Heraan and their allies were now in disarray with the loss of one of their larger ships and a large gap having appeared in the center of their forces.  Dolan thought the ship was likely a carrier, due to its large size, which seemed more designed toward giving fighter support than going in an open confrontation with another vessel.  In any case, the Heraan were still giving the Gallifreyans and their allies a very difficult time.  While the Heraan had taken more losses, their forces were more expendable, if they continued assault was any indication.  Dolan's calculations and subsequent results were grim - to say the least, if the Gallifreyans didn't get a miracle, their success was dangerously slim.

Dolan was woken out of his musing by the console's beeping.

"We are about the begin reentry, so please hold on tight," Dolan explained to his passengers, "Once we land, make sure you're armed and ready for a tough battle.  We're going to have to wait for the marines, since going out and searching for them is too dangerous."  Dolan then input several commands into the console as the escape pod entered Gallifrey's atmosphere.

Not too long after, Dolan manuevered the escape pod into a landing on top of a high hill overlooking the city of Antioch.  Dolan grimaced as he looked down at the city - numerous areas were in flames, with large clouds of smoke covering many districts of the massive city.  Dolan turned away from the damaged city as dozens of other escape pods landed nearby Dolan's.  He began coordinating an effort to fortify the area until the marines could arrive.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

"Well, it probably isn't my place to give tactical advice..." said Dolan, hesitating momentarily, before continuing.  "From what I can see, the weaker vessels should do what ever they can to protect the stronger vessels, including intercepting enemy fire with the ship itself.  Supportive fire from these weaker vessels should be a secondary priority.  If our enemies are as powerful as I am being told, the stronger vessels need to be given as much time as possible to inflict damage to the enemy before taking damage themselves.  In this spirit, there should be several small groups of ships diving deep into the enemy formation, since if the enemy tries to fire on them, their missed shots will likely hit one of their allied vessels, and, as those ships are likely to be destroyed sooner or later, they can be considered expendable."  Dolan paused for a moment, thinking, and then added, "As for ships carrying troops, such as ours, we should make our way to the planet as quickly as possible without compromising the ship and deploy the troops at strategic locations.  We would then rejoin the main fleet and resume protecting the stronger ships of the fleet...that is, unless you want to perform one of those raiding tactics I mentioned earlier."

Lieutenant Dolan - Command Vehicle, Heraani Border World

As the marines retreated rapidly from the space cannon, Colonel Balkazar signaled to the Normandy to transport the marines back to the ship.  The Heraan seemed very surprised at the sudden retreat of the marines, if their sudden slowing in their pace was any indication.

The Normandy soon arrived and began transporting marines as soon as the ship got a lock on them.  Within minutes, all of the surviving marines and vehicles were transported back to the Normandy and the ship departed the planet as fast as it had arrived.  However, the reactors at the space cannon had overloaded before the ship could fully escape the blast radius and so the ship was hit by the resulting shockwave, throwing the ship out of control for several seconds.  Control of the ship was soon restored though and the ship set a course back to Avalon Station.

Lieutenant Dolan - Command Vehicle, Planet containing Heraani Cannon

The situation was growing dire.  The marines were essentially pinned down by Heraani forces and making it difficult to move forward.  The only options were to hold their ground and retreat and the only viable option was to hold their ground.  Dolan come up with a way to destroy the cannon, but it would rely on very precise timing from the Normandy to rescue the marines...in any case, the marines had to get inside the cannon and that wasn't happening any time soon.

Lieutenant Dolan - Command Vehicle, Heraani Border World

Dolan nodded briefly before sending a brief message to all of the marines notifying them of the additional orders.  Soon there were even more explosions added to the already deafening background noise, but Dolan tuned it all out.  He soon decided that the best way to eliminate the cannon would be to have its numerous reactors overloaded.  The plan had several problems - firstly, the marines had to get inside, which may take hours.  Secondly, they had to penetrate deep into the cannon to reach its main control area.  Thirdly, someone had to find a way to order all of the reactors to overload simontaneously, which would prove difficult since there would likely be numerous safeguards in place.  And lastly, the only way to escape would be to have the Normandy transport the entire battle group out of the cannon before the whole facility blew up, which would require precise timing as to not endanger the Normandy crew or have everyone in the facility die.  Dolan worked on removing these problems but it seemed the marines would have to rely on courage, themselves, and sheer, dumb luck.
