Lieutenant Dolan - Citadel of Adun

When the Heraan attacked, Dolan leapt backwards and began firing at the Heraan charging at him.  Most of the shots missed, as Dolan didn't have time to compensate for his sudden change in position and shift his focus on his new target.  As he landed, he began to run toward the grand hall backwards, continuing to fire at the Heraan.  Once he passed though the entrance into the main chamber from the grand hall, he looked for several temporary hiding places, as his phaser rifle needed time to recharge.  There were none in sight however, forcing Dolan to continue running.

The Heraan, however, was faster and caught up to Dolan before he could take more than a few steps.  Dolan managed to dodge the Heraan's first swing and used his phaser rifle to deflect the second.  Dolan quickly decided the only thing he could do at the moment was to deflect and dodge the Heraan's attacks until either it tired out or Dolan had a chance to escape.  Since Dolan had not yet seen a Heraan tire out, it seemed as if Dolan's only option was to try to escape as soon as he could.  As he dodged the Heraan's next couple of blows and deflected the next one, he saw his phaser rifle was slowly being torn apart.  He could already see small cuts where the energy blade had made contact with the rifle.

Upon seeing this, when the Heraan made its next swing, Dolan ducked under it and pushed the Heraan up and back with his phaser rifle.  As soon as its weight was off the rifle, Dolan swung it into position and fired it at the Heraan at maximum power repeatedly.  Dolan continued to fire at the Heraan when it landed on its back, deciding not to risk the chance it had survived so many hits with the phaser rifle.

After firing steadily at the Heraan for a good half minute, Dolan stopped.  The body was covered with phaser burns so severely and throughly, if the Heraan wasn't already dead, it would be very soon.  Dolan gave the body a final phaser blast just to be safe before heading back into the main chamber to help the rest of the strike team.

Lieutenant Dolan - Corridor inside Space Cannon, Heraani Border World

Dolan led the team he gathered through the breach in the walls of the facility housing the space cannon.  After consulting his tricorder, he led his team through several corridors, dodging groups of Heraan racing to the breach.  A dozen more corridors later and the team had arrived safely and undetected at the secondary control room.  Fortunately it was unguarded and empty and the team quickly secured the room while Dolan searched for the console that controlled the power supply to the whole facility.

Lieutenant Dolan - Outskirts of Antioch, Gallifrey

Dolan noted Raszagal's brief outburst with another Gallifreyan with mild interest.  He was unaware of Raszagal's position with the rest of Gallifreyans, not having the time to check, nor the interest.  However, he was surprised that there was so much outward hostility toward her.  Even the other Gallifreyans that had stayed with the marines were showing subtle signs of hostility, or at least great disapproval or dislike, toward Raszagal.  He mused about this as he continued to scan the horizion for the arrival of the Cardinal Virtue's survivors...or arriving Heraani forces.

After another brief scan, Dolan looked at a nearby screen that displayed the situation throughout the planet and in space.  He wished briefly that he was able to view the space battle, but since the battle was taking place in the space between Gallifrey's sun and the planet, he was unable to because of the sunlight.  He shrugged this thought off as he looked at the situation reports.

The space battle was still not progressing completely to the Gallifreyan's favor; at best, it would be a Pyrrhic victory for the Heraan if the battle progressed as it was, even with the Normandy's sacrifice.  The Gallifreyans' and their allies' ships just could not do enough damage before their ships were either critically damaged, destroyed, or confronted with several waves of Heraani fighters.

The battles on the planet were progressing marginably better, though projections indicated that only a fraction of the Gallifreyan population would survive the conflict, estimated at 15%, and that was without factoring the more than likely possiblity of Heraani reinforcements.  The Heraan just outnumbered the Gallifreyans on all fronts, often overwhelming the Gallifreyans with only sheer numbers.

An urgent beeping sound indicated that the Federation just lost two more ships in the space battle.  Dolan grimaced, certain that the Heraan's victory was only being delayed at this point.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

=/\= Bridge to Crew =/\=
All hands abandon ship.  I repeat, all hands abandon ship.  Set course for Gallifrey, to the marines' last known coordinates.
=/\= Bridge out =/\=

"Captain, aft shields are failing and -" Dolan was cut off as the ship shuddered from several hits by the pursuing Heraani vessels.

Suddenly, the computer rang out a warning, "Warp core has been compromised.  Warp core breach in 1 minute."

Dolan swore as he heard those words and he quickly set the tactical controls on automatic firing.  As he was leaving, Dolan took a brief look around the bridge.  Debris covered the bridge and the medical team was helping as many people as they could to the escape pod.  The remaining bridge crew, aside from the captain, was fleeing from the flames that had erupted at several areas of the bridge.  Dolan then turned and headed for an escape pod himself.  As he reached it, the computer gave another warning.

"Warp core breach in 45 seconds," said the computer.  Dolan entered an escape pod and directed as many people as he could inside.  Once it was full, Dolan took over the escape pod's navigation and set course for Gallifrey, to the last know coordinates of the marines, before ejecting the escape pod.  He carefully directed the escape pod away from the Normandy and its pursuing ships.  Dolan then set a complicated course into the navigation controls in order to put the escape pod in a minimal amount of danger while getting it to Gallifrey as fast as it could.

Lieutenant Dolan - Presidium District of Antioch, Gallifrey

Dolan nodded.  He was somewhat unsure how marines and Starfleet ranks mixed, but, since he knew far less about what was going on at the moment than Raszagal or the Council members apparently did, he did not argue with Raszagal's request.  Dolan then adjusted his phaser rifle and followed the Council members as they moved off.

Dolan had received the impression the Council members were going to rescue someone or something from a place they called the "Citadel", but was still very much in the dark about the situation.  Dolan decided that the Council members would divulge information when they thought it would be necessary.

Lieutenant Dolan - Marine Landing Zone, Gallifrey

=/\= Understood.  Heading to your coordinates now. =/\=

Dolan relayed Balkazar's orders to the pilots.  He hopped back into the Pelican and the Pelicans took off, heading for the battlefield at full speed.  The Pelicans soon landed on the outskirts of the battlefield, so the Pelicans weren't in danger of being hit.  The crew disembarked the Pelicans, still armed from their brief skirmish with the Heraan and headed out for the marines' location.

Lieutenant Dolan - Escape Pod Landing Zone, Gallifrey

The Normandy crew managed to hold off the Heraan long enough for the Pelicans' to arrive and clear the hill of most of the charging Heraan.  The remaining Heraan appeared to be regrouping, which would hopefully give the crew enough time to board the Pelicans and leave.  As the Pelicans' landed, small groups of the crew pulled back from the front lines, retreating into the Pelicans, with the injured going in first, with increasing numbers retreating as the battle entered a period of silence.  After a few minutes, the entire crew had manage to enter the Pelicans and the Pelicans lifted off, leaving an group of Heraan that were probably not very happy with their prey getting away.

After a rather brief trip, the Pelicans began to descend.  As Dolan got off the Pelican, he realized they had arrived at the marines' landing zone.  He contacted Colonel Balkazar for further orders.

=/\= Lt. Dolan to Col. Balkazar.  The Normandy crew has safely arrived at the marines' landing zone.  What are your orders for us here?  Dolan out. =/\=

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

"Understood," replied Dolan, "But may I suggest that the fleet's ships deploy their shuttle craft?  They may not be designed for battle, but it seems we will need every phaser blast we can get."

The ship arrived at the planet's surface shortly after breaking formation and the marines were deployed.  They were going to be on their own for the duration of the battle and possibly after that.  As the Normandy rejoined the fleet, its phasers began to fire at several Heraani fighters that were concentrating on a Gallifreyan battlecrusier.  Before the fighters could react, one of their number was destroyed and two others badly damaged.  Two dozen Heraani fighters changed their direction and headed directly for the Normandy.

"Fighters inbound!" exclaimed Dolan, in an unnecessary warning to the rest of the bridge crew.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

Dolan rolled his eyes at the Admiral's message.  Telling people they were going to die for a purpose doesn't change the fact that they're going to die.

~But if that makes people feel better about death, then so be it~ Dolan thought to himself.  In any case, the fleet was preparing to go to warp at Fleet Commodore Taurik's command.

Lieutenant Dolan - Troop Bay, Pelican Dropship Charlie 0-2-2

Dolan did not question Master Techerakh's course change, though he called out, "So where are we headed now?"

The Pelican began to make unusual manuevers as it dodged weapons fire from the surface as they approached Antioch and at the same time attempting to maintain stability since the troop bay doors were locked in an open position, leaving anyone there struggling to maintain their footing while defending against any weapons fire that made it into the troop bay.  While Dolan and the Council members found it easier to adjust, the marines and the Admirals experienced some difficulty staying upright.

Suddenly, as the Pelican entered Antioch's perimeter, it shook violently, almost throwing one of the marines out of the ship.  A piercing beeping noise rang throughout the Pelican.

The pilot yelled out, "We've been hit!  We'll be able to make it to the center of the city, but the trip is going to be one way!  Get ready to jump on my command!"

The Pelican began a slow, thankfully somewhat stable, descent toward the city.  Suddenly, it tipped into a nose-dive as it neared the city's center.

"NOW!"  Everyone in the doomed Pelican leaped from the ship as it crashed into the city, distracting fighters nearby.  Dolan took a quick head count and was satisfied that everyone had survived the jump.  Everyone then gathered near the remains of the Pelican, in order to determine what to do next.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

The Normandy fought off a swarm of Heraani fighters, with some help from the Normandy's shuttlecraft.  By now, the Normandy had woven its way deep into the front lines, doing its best to guard the capital ships from the worst of enemy fire.  Before the shuttlecraft could return to the safety of the Normandy's hanger bay, a full spread of torpedoes hit the Normandy.  The ship rocked violently and the shuttlecraft were forced to abort landing, instead turning to confront a squadron of Heraani fighters that were approaching from the ship's aft.  Before the Normandy could manuever its way to help aid the shuttlecraft, another spread of torpedoes slammed into the Normandy.  Dolan quietly cursed the ship's unluckiness in the battle so far as he saw that the forward shields were close to collapse as a result of the last torpedo hits.  Even so, the ship's phasers continued to fire constantly, with full spreads of torpedoes flying from their launchers toward the enemy as soon as they were reloaded.

Suddenly, two more squadrons of Heraani fighters targeted the Normandy.  Dolan continued to mutter a stream of swears as the Normandy came under heavy fire.  The ship shuddered violently under their concentrated fire.  Dolan calculated with complete certainty that, even with the most positive possible variables accounted for, the forward shields would completely collapse in 4 minutes, with aft shields following 3 minutes after.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

=/\= USS Normandy to Avalon Station =/\=

We acknowledge and will be making our way to the fleet now.

=/\= Normandy out =/\=

The ship was quickly manuevered and soon joined the modest fleet of ships that Admiral Karelia had gathered.  Dolan received a copy of the unclassified data the ship had received from Avalon Station.  The coordinates of Galifrey were set so that the ship could go to warp there in a moment's notice.  Dolan then read through the information and furrowed his eyebrows as he did so.  The situation was going to be very difficult to overcome.

Lieutenant Dolan - Battlefield on Outskirts of Antioch, Gallifrey

The Normandy crew joined the marines in finishing off the remaining Heraani soldiers on the battlefield.  After that was taken care of, the marines and the crew met up to discuss their next move.  The Gallifreyans had largely withdrawn from the battlefield once the fighting was finished, heading off to another area where the Heraan had attacked.  A small group still remained with the marines and the crew when the meeting began.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

Dolan was surprised at Rajnus's abrupt departure but orders were orders and he moved to sit in the Captain's seat.  Once he was seated, he began running through the workings of every weapon he knew of, wondering what would be the most effective in a ship-to-ship battle.  After assessing and reassessing each weapon type he knew of, he discarded the use of directed-energy or plasma based weaponary, as shields were designed to absorb and disperse energy in such a form.  He briefly considered trying to create a plasma or energy weapon that fired a narrow, high-intensity beam of energy or plasma, but discarded it, since though the weapon would likely prove extremely effective, the technology to create such a weapon did not yet exist - the closest parallel that Dolan could think of was one from his own universe, one that he did not have the schematics for; the Spiderbot was a highly experimental unit and its blueprints were a tightly guarded secret.

Dolan's second idea was also disgarded quickly - nuclear missiles were by far weaker than the photon and quantum torpedoes that the Federation possess.

The third idea that came to Dolan's mind was, to him at least, genius.  He immediately took out a PADD and began drafting a plan for a kinetic-based weapon, a railgun, a weapon that was common knowledge in the UEF.  His reasoning for this was that most ships relied on their shields as their main defense against enemy weaponary.  The projectile fired from a railgun takes advantage of this as it would be accelerated to speeds that would very likely penetrate through the shields immediately and, since most ships were additionally not heavily armored, severly damage the targeted vessel.  However, since Dolan was basing his idea off UEF designs, which were not designed to work in a space environment, it would take sometime to make all of the necessary adjustments to construct a working model.  As such, he finished plotting out most of the weapon's design before putting his PADD away and checking the viewscreen, observing the variety of ships that the fleet was composed of.

Lieutenant Dolan - Bridge, USS Normandy

Dolan was alarmed when both the Operations Officer and the Tactical Officer were thrown off their feet and didn't rise up.  He quickly contacted the rest of the ship to relay the captain's orders and to deploy the repair teams to the most critical areas before ordering Sickbay to send a medical team to the bridge.  After finishing giving those orders, Dolan took over the tactical consoles, sending phaser fire and torpedoes to gain the maximum amount of attention from the enemy.  Fortunately, Dolan could figure out the shield frequencies and nutations rather quickly and adjusted the phasers and torpedoes accordingly.  The increased explosions caused by the Normandy drew even more Heraani vessels into the chase.

"Aft shields have fallen to 15% and forward shields are gone!" yelled Dolan as sparks continued to fly around the bridge.  "Structural integrity is down!  We have hull breaches on decks 4, 7, and 8 and emergency force fields won't hold much longer!  I'm redirecting power from the warp core to the shields.  That'll hopefully give us a couple more minutes."

A large group of Heraani vessels pursued the Normandy once it disengaged from the battle and raced to Gallifrey's moon.  Both the Heraan and the Normandy continued to exchange fire, though due to Dolan's rapid calculations, almost every phaser blast and torpedo penetrated the Heraani shields, destroying or disabling the ships.  Even with the boost from the warp core and Dolan's help however, the aft shields continued to wear down at an alarming rate.
