Yes Fleet Captain, a tractor beam is a non-Newtonian device which creates an attraction between the emitter and the target. The target is always drawn toward the emitter, irrespective of mass, because the beam does not actually transmit a force across space. It functions similarly to the warp drive, manipulating space-time at the target's position.

It is possible to transmit certain sorts of signals from the target back through the tractor to the emitter.

*Cadet Mann reenters the classroom*

"Fleet Captain Archer, I have completed the engineering exam and submitted it for your evaluation."

*A nervous cadet stood hoping that he had passed the test*

=^= Mann here Fleet Captain, getting readings now, shield integrity seems to be stabilizing, shield strength right now at 60% and holding=^=

*Mann turns to Kassie*

"It seems the increase in tractor strength from the Lhasa has stabilized the shield integrity for the moment."

"Ensign Kassie, if the ships are going to use their shields to envelope us they better make it quick!  Shield integrity decreasing."

*Mann's panel then flashed an alarm and a klaxon sounded*

"Blast!  Shield generator near the sensor array is failing, I better get down there and lock it down"

*Mann picked up an engineering kit and ran out of Engineering, he headed to lower levels of the station in order to try to repair the failing shield generator*

=^=Mann to Ensign Kassie, I am at the junction location for the shield generator, please monitor it's condition and let me know when readings return to nominal, Mann out=^=

*Mann opened the hatchway that led to the shield generator, the heat was instense.  Being Andorian, the heat affected him more than most.  He fought through the intense heat and made his way to the generator.  He took out his scanner and began to take readings*

"Nuts, need to increase the modulation of the phase inductor."

*Mann bagan making the adjustments in earnest*

"Come on baby, get in there, ugh, yes that should do it"

*The adjustments made Mann made his towards the exit*

=^=Mann to Kassie, I have made the adjustments and.....I....think.........................................=^=

*Mann had almost made out of the conduit but the intense heat had overcome him, he lay there not moving*

"Yes Sir!"

*With that Mann moves over to the selected Engineering console and begins programming it for monitoring all shield generators.*

*Mann reenters Engineering, turning to the Fleet Captain*

"Sir, Ensign Mann reporting for duty.  I have been cleared medically and am ready to continue with my engineering tasks."

*Mann then whispers to Ensign Kassie*

"Thanks, for the quick beam out Kassie, I owe you for that one, otherwise that heat would've done me in"

"Well to tell the truth running freight can get a bit well, boring.  Most freighters I was on were usually only staffed with a skeleton crew.  However, there was this one ship I was on with two other humans.  They introduced me to a human sport called football.  We used to go and have kick-abouts all over the ship, tremendous fun.  They even took me to some matches when we took some shore leave on Earth.  Ever since then I have been hooked on that sport.  Ah but look who is rambling now, sorry Ensign Kassie.  Maybe some day you could give some pointers on that......what did you call it?  A Bath'lith?"

*Mann's face turned a bit more blue after asking that question, in a typical Andorian blush"

*Looking up from the console Mann looks at Kassie and smiles*

"No, Ensign Kassie I have not decided as of yet.  Right now I am happy to help in moving hte space station.  Oh, and thanks for the advice.  I must say that I am impressed with your abilities, not only in engineering......."

*Mann quickly looked away hoping he had not spoken out of turn*

*Ensign Mann working at his Engineering console looks up at both the Captain and Crewman*

"Captain, I have been running diagnostics on all shield genetors and the matrix.  There are some slight deviations in the synchronization.  I don't think it is a massive problem but I would advise a recalibration.  I should be able to complete it from my station here without impacting the schedule."

OOC: Well spotted I am indeed Andorian http://www.expansionfleet.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

IC: *Mann listens to Ensign Kassie's story keeping one eye on the console and always watching her out of the corner of his other eye.  Mann noted her smiles coming refreshingly across her face*

"Very interesting story Ensign Kassie.  And no I do not think you were rambling.  My story is not quite that interesting.  I ran frieght back in the Alpha quadrant for awhile and wanted more of a challenge.  Always being attracted to Star Fleet I thought what the heck, come out to the Delta Quadrant and join up."

"I suppose I will find my way once this mission is over, I will consider joining the Rivendell you make it sound like a fine ship."

*Mann brings up Ensign Kassie's calculations on the view screen*

"Aye, 50%, brilliant once more, that gives sufficient safety margin to drop the station out of warp yet give us the maximum amount of time at warp.  A wonderful combination of safety and efficiency."

"You know, you're the first Vulcan I have ever seen smile, I must say it suits you very nicely."

*With a quick smile Mann went back to monitoring the shield generators*

"Well the shield generator monitoring station is up and running and showing green status"

*Turns to Ensign Kassie*

"I just wanted to say Ensign Kassie that I thought you calculations were brilliant"

*Ensign Mann returns to Main Engineering*

"Sorry for the delay Sir.  My calibrations took longer than expected.  It seems past attacks on the station left the shield generators in worse shape than I anticipated."

"Anyways, I am ready to help get the station ready"

*Mann glances over to Kassie*

"Hello Ensign, I am Ensign Gunn Mann"

*The Engineering stations were a mass of alarms.  Sparks were shooting from the panels as Ensigns Mann and Kassie tried to keep control of things*

=^=Mann to Fleet Captain Archer, Sir, things are a bit of a mess down here right now.  I.....trying...........no response from..........should be able..........and return to...........=^=

*Mann turns to Kassie*

"Kassie, I don't know how much of that message the Fleet Captain got, but I think we will need at least 2 hours to repair this overload then return to warp.  I am going to the Jeffries Tube Junction C-47 to install this new synch relay, it should allow us to rebuild the shield intensity."

*Facing Kassie*

"I concur, even though shields have stabilized I suspect that will not last forever."

*Mann then moves over to another engineering panel and begins to feverishly work on rerouting power to the shields*

"Ensign Kassie I am rerouting power from all food replicators, diverting 50% power from weapons and then I shall draw from life support, hopefully the drain from life support will not be untolerable."

"Keep an eye on those shield generator temperatures, we can't afford any thermal breakdown at this moment!"

"The shield generators have all been recalibrated and are at maximum efficiency Sir.  I think perhaps if I could program one engineering station here to be the main control and monitoring point for the shield generators during the journey that will help expedite any problems encountered.  Locate the problems quickly and lock them down before we run into more complicated problems that could cause delays."
