Kirby Oak

Rank: Ensign
Current assignment: Engineering, USS Evolution
Full Name: Kirby DeLorean Oak
Date of birth: August 1, 2362
Place of birth:  New York City, Earth
Parents: Gary Hewney Oak (Civilian Professor, Daystrom Institute), Commander Melody Talise Oak (d. 2366; Last position: XO, USS Guardian)

When Kirby's mother, Melody (at the time a Lieutenant Commander), found out she was pregnant, she resigned her current ship position to take a position on Earth. She and her husband, Gary, then relocated to New York City, where they started to raise Kirby.

When Kirby was three, his mother was offered a promotion to Commander and a position as executive officer of the USS Guardian. Unable to resist the call of exploration any longer, Melody accepted. Agreeing that Kirby would be better off growing up on Earth then on a busy starship, his parents decided that he would stay with his father.

Unfortunately, disaster struck the next year. While the Guardian was on a mission, it encountered a Borg ship. After attempting to fight it off, the ship was destroyed. All members of the crew were killed, including Kirby's mother.

Gary grieved for his wife and became more protective of their son. He moved closer to his job at the Daystrom Institute. Here Kirby went through the rest of his childhood. He would often come with his father to work, usually ending up exploring the complex on his own (much to his father's distress). In this way, by observing some of the experiments and seminars that were there, he gained most of his education.

Every so often he went to conferences on near by worlds (mostly Vulcan) with his father. One time he even got to visit Deep Space 9. He got ill on the ship ride there, though, and ended up spending most of the visit in the sickbay.

It was when he was in his early teens that he first decided to be an engineer. He was leaning towards science (the field his father was proficient at, even if he wasn't in Starfleet). An inspirational presentation by the famed engineer, Captain Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, caused him to change his mind.

When Kirby first told his father that he was joining Starfleet, and what's more the relatively new Expansion Fleet, Gary was a little worried. Seeing Melody's spirit in his son, though, and happy that Kirby's life hadn't deterred it, Gary let him go.
After some prep, Kirby began his long journey to Avalon Station in the Delta Quadrant...

Psychological Evaluation
Being only four at the time of his mother's death, Kirby doesn't remember much about her. Most of what he does remember is her funeral. This has a significant emotional impact on him, but nothing that will interfere with his duty. He is also not often talkative with someone he doesn't know well. He rarely says anything with a definite confirmation, as well. This isn't a self-doubt but a fear of responsibility. Once again, though, this won't affect his work, but may limit his command opportunities if he doesn't overcome it. One final thing that may be a problem is his choice of Expansion Fleet. Going to the Delta Quadrant may be a way of him trying to encounter, and battle, the Borg so as to avenge his mother. He shows no signs of any such tendencies, however, and I only include it in this report to list all possibilities, even if it is unlikely.
